There is nothing to stand aside here - the RFC is more than clear.

This has nothing to do with CR+NL (except that it shows up) but with,
as the error message says, "improper command pipelining" - you're not
supposed to send QUIT right away, but you're supposed to wait for the
reply to HELO, and only *then* send the next command (here: QUIT).
